End of Course Reflection

As I reflect back on what has been valuable learning for me, I am amazed by how far I have come in such a short time.  In the middle of June, I was given an iPad just days before this course started.  I had no prior experience with iPads and limited knowledge regarding smartphones. I have a “dumb phone” that works great for calls and texting but I haven’t bothered to upgrade to a smartphone since 9 hours per day, I work in a classroom with no cell phone access…so from a cost benefit stand point it is not worth the money.  But back to iPads, in those first few days, I found myself bumbling and stumbling in my attempts to navigate the iPad and its apps. I would occasionally holler to my son, who has an iPhone, for help when I was stuck but I clearly had a lot of learning to do if I was going to use this tool with students come Fall.  Now fast forward to October, nearly four months later, and I am comfortable navigating the iPad.  I know how to search for apps, purchase apps as well as figure out how to use them.  I use the iPad daily both personally and professionally.  I have even begun to use the iPad with my students.  First by using the iPad to photograph my students on a nature scavenger hunt and then using these photos to create a slideshow to show the students and have them reflect on our scavenger hunt and the things we found.  I have begun to introduce the iPad to students in my kindergarten class; teaching them how to take care of them and we have begun to teach the students how to use the different apps on the kindergarten iPads.

I found having time to explore specific apps, create projects with these apps, even creating a blog to reflect and post my learning enabled me to learn by doing.  It was hands on and learner directed learning while at the same time allowing us to complete a common assignment.  After learning by doing, I was then able to think about my learning and build on my knowledge as well as figure out what I still wanted to know and learn how to do it.  Some of this learning was easy and some of it was frustrating and time consuming.   All of it was a great diversion while sitting on the couch recovering from major knee surgery.  Having professional peers engaged in the same process helped me to use them for resources when I was encountering difficulties as well as share my knowledge in areas that I understood more readily and felt more confident.  We definitely learned a lot from each other and about each other in this process.

I plan to continue using the iPad, daily, to document my observations of student learning.  The app, Teacher Notes, enables me to photograph or video or audio record student work and/or thinking, type a note and assign each observation to the student or students involved, the learning domain and the content area within that domain.  This saves me time with recording and filing student notes; especially if the observation is for multiple students.  I plan to continue to introduce apps to students during guided exploration.  These apps were picked by our grade level team for our cart of iPads.  The apps are varied in content so their uses will be varied as well.  It is my plan that students will use the iPads to both practice and build upon their current skills and knowledge.  I hope to use the iPads to make books with my students that can be shared electronically with the student’s parents. Other ways I use the iPad professionally are really an extension of my computer such as checking email, calendar features, note taking features, etc.

I think it would be great to have time to work on projects or share ideas either in my grade level or in a K-2 group.  I think sharing of ideas, both what we have been successful with as well as what did not go well and why, is important.  By sharing ideas we can continue to learn from one another and ideally this should make the children’s classroom iPad experiences richer.   This class has been great and I have learned so much; Thank you!

Reflection on Challenge 5

Dropbox was easy to use but I do have to admit I have been using it on my PC for about 6-9 Months now that way I don't have to remember where my thumb drive is. I can work on files at home and they are automatically at school when I get there. I update my morning message and if I am out sick I can give the sub an explanation about how to open the file. I have been doing some thinking about workflow and what I want kindergarteners to use the iPads for and some ideas that come to mind are for them to create books, use apps to develop literacy skills such as letter ID, phonological awareness skills & some problem solving. Initially the kids will need to be taught how to use and treat the iPad, then they will need to be taught how to use specific apps. Depending on their knowledge of technology & devices this could go quickly or more slowly. I am sure using iPads will be motivating to them no matter how they are used. It also is going to be essential as a teacher to know each and every app thoroughly and how students are going to share their work... If the workflow doesn't work smoothly then frustration will mount for both students and teachers I am glad we are going to spend some time learning about workflow since it is different than the PC workflow we are used to...this too can present challenges for kids. I am curious about who is responsible for loading and updating apps we may choose as a grade level team and how purchasing apps with budget $ will work?

How to post a New Background.

Here are the steps I took to change my background.  I had a request to share and thought I would share with everyone since I took the time to type it up.

How to change your background:

1. Email picture to yourself
2. Go into your email and download the picture to your computer.
3. Go to the picture in your computer...where ever you saved the download to ( ie down load file or pictures)
4.right click on the picture a screen will come up...choose open with Microsoft office 2010.
5. Choose edit pictures on the tool bar.
6. On right side of screen choose compress pictures and I think I chose web pages (but it might have been documents).
7. Click ok...then save this file(I renamed it so that I wouldn't lose my original in case it didn't work( and it didn't the first time which is why I can't remember whether it was web page or document).
8.go online to blogger.com & sign into your account
9. Click on view blog
10. Click on design
11. Click on customize
12. Click on background. You should see whatever your current background is.
13. there is a little down arrow next to your image click on it and a screen should pop up and at the top of this screen it says upload image
14. Click browse and find it on your computer and open it
15. Once it has uploaded click done.
16. Then in top right corner it says apply to blog. It either changes it right then or you can click on view blog to see the changes.

Reflection on Challenge 4

So I have been giving some thought to how I would use this weeks apps with kindergarten kids and this is what I've come up with. Either of the mapping programs would be good to use to make character maps or story maps; however, I would want to do this on my smart board more as a group activity since the kids can't type themselves. This means I would need to come up with an apple tv which is not a cheap expenditure with limited teacher $. As stated in my comments about write pad, it could be used to have kids practice letter formation or simple CVC words. NeuAnnotate is something that I might see myself using but not really an app that I could see kindergarten students using. I am sure that some of the kids would really enjoy the art programs... I still like the messy real life art mediums for young kids but this could have it's place. For instance when we did our plays in the spring the kids drew their characters and we had to photograph them to make our power point presentation with these art apps there would already be an electronic painting thus saving one step in the process. I think I liked the mapping apps the best because I like to be able to show how ideas link together and I find these visuals useful as a learner. I also think these tools will be useful in developing kids visual literacy skills. It just occurred to me that I could adapt an activity I had parents do, choosing 5 words that describes their child and use the mapping app to produce the results both electronically and in paper form for display.

New Background

So here is the new background I created in Art Rage...not sure how much I like it but I will give it a few days to grow on me.

ArtRage: thoughts from the couch

ArtRage: Darkness

An extra picture for your enjoyment.

One of my ArtRage Paintings: Darkness

ArtRage: Test artwork

Art rage is a bit more complicated to use but I think with practice you could make some pretty amazing pictures. When I went to the Art in Bloom Festival there were two artists there who used iPad apps to create paintings...it was pretty cool to watch. They both used styluses to complete their masterpieces.

Attached: My Drawing Pad Artwork

Here is a test creation. This program is pretty easy to use and I like the stamps as a way to enhance a picture since I don't draw on the iPad very well.

with Drawing Pad - http://drawingpadapp.com

Write pad

This program is pretty interesting. I could see having kindergarteners practice writing letters and then have a copy of it in text form...it is not as good as having the actual writing sample but it does provide some formative information about the accuracy of their letter formation, especially when done on the yellow lines.

Write pad trial

This program was fairly easy to use...it might provide good letter formation practice. I would want to test it with young kids.

Ghost writer

I have been messing about with ghostwriter. I wish I had a stylus to try as I think I might like this program better with one. I do not like trying to read my hand writing when written with my finger. Ghostwriter has some cool features and I was able to import my review file from Dropbox as well as a photo from the camera and the photo roll. I think neuAnnotate and noteability were easier for me to intuitively pick up and use. In my doodling days of high school I think this would be fun with a stylus.

Pam: idea sketch

This app was user friendly as well. However, when linking multiple bubbles it wanted to use a dashed line to connect my brothers to their child but I didn't like the way it looked visually. I wished it had given me the option to use either solid or dashes for the line. This was not a big deal and the app is pretty easy to use.

Inspiration Maps Lite document: Pam

So somehow my original map had some of the details deleted just before I sent it...so I went back and edited it and that is when I discovered that I could change the ovals to clouds. This would be a great tool to use with kids before writing.

Challenge 3 Reflection

I explored all three apps this week. I spent the most time with screen chomp & explain everything since I had already explored educreations when we were exploring apps on our own. Screen chomp was actually a bit challenging at first because I wanted another page and couldn't figure out how to get one. Eventually I realized that I could erase the first page and write the second. I also wanted to be able to write the whole page and then record it but it made more sense to write a line record then audio & then write the next line. I also managed to cover the microphone in the middle of the video so you couldn't hear my audio. I like the explain everything app better. I found it to be more user friendly. I wanted to demo a homemade play dough recipe for parents but I didn't want to make play dough for my classroom this early in the summer. I even thought about making it for my niece but she is leaving for vacation so she wouldn't be home to receive it in the mail. So instead explained how to use a Keurig. Additionally, I am having some Internet connection issues since the storm so I don't think it posted to my blog... I will try again tomorrow.

Reflection on Challenge 2

The apps we used this week will be fun to use with kids. I especially like Story Kit...one, It is simple to use & two, the kids can narrate their stories. I can see kids illustrating books and me scanning in their illustrations, then having them narrate, I could even transcribe their words into text. I also like the idea of having simple text books that the kids could read to themselves as a fun way to practice reading and build sight word knowledge or even some basic math skills. I think that I would have kindergarten students illustrate on paper since the drawing features lend themselves to pictures with less detail. I can also see making some books where children can tell about their families using photos. I think this weeks tools are more kid friendly for kindergarteners to use. I don't foresee using dictation with kids mostly due to the fact that so many of them have articulation errors in their speech to begin with; I think I would spend more time editing rather than just typing what they want to say. I do like the other 3 programs but must admit I would be very frustrated if what happened to me with story robe happened to my students. I know my local copy was available to view but if I am taking the time to produce finished work like this I would want to share it with their families. Also, I set up google reader and what a fast way to view everyone's posts & I noticed that sometimes you can view things on the computer which just don't work on the iPad. All in all a good week.

Story Robe

Well I have this cute little video about Woodland Animals but Story Robe keeps freezing when I go to email it so I can't seem to share it. I will keep trying to get it onto my blog but sometimes technology has a mind of it's own. Up to the sharing point it was pretty easy to use.

Scribble Press Reflection

So I like the book making with scribble press and I could see using it with kids. However, I did run into one problem...when I published the book to iBooks the text on two of my pages covered the bottom part of my photograph that I had taken & used in my story, even though it did not do this on my draft. I went back in to edit and fix this but it did not allow me to click on the photo & re-size it. I then erased the pictures and took the pictures again, re-inserted them and re-published the book but the published book did not reflect the changes I had just made to the two photos. This was a bit frustrating but I decided to leave it alone since I can't seem to find a way to make my changes show up. I will just keep in mind when using photos to leave a larger margin for the text.

Dictation 2

I don't think it u doers todo me any better this time.

So I went to see the surgeon on Monday and he told me I can stop wearing my brace inside the house and move to stop wearing my brave outside the house. He was pleases with my knee bending 90 degrees and he hopes that l'll have full range of motion when I see him in three weeks. He said if I was going to the fair them I should put the brace on to protect it. I am still healing for 12 weeks and hopefully by December things will be 100% back to normal. So, all in all it was a good visit.

Dictation 1

This really had a hard time understanding me. Maybe if I talk slower?

Challenge 1 Reflection

I enjoyed these programs in our challenge. I found both the picture collage and animoto very easy & fun to use. I did not like the cropping feature of the picture collage; drawing with your finger what you want cropped is creative but I really wanted a straight line and couldn't draw one if my life depended upon it. Animoto was fun and I enjoyed the ease of use and that it had music to choose from that could be used in our videos. This was important to me since I tend to listen to pandora rather than purchase music on iTunes. HD slide show was definitely more complicated to figure out but with that complexity there are a lot more options for picture editing. I did purchase a song and made a video of pictures from my sons high school graduation. It came out ok but this program is too complex to use with kindergarten students. With that said, i can see myself using it for sideshows for families about their children for special events such as open house. As i am typing this reflection i am wondering if i could import a digital recording of the kids singing or talking to go with the pictures, I will need to go exploring this. I can see myself using animoto & pic collage with kindergarten kids. They could pick out pictures or maybe even take pictures to tell a story. They love seeing pictures of their work & of themselves. One thing that has struck me is I am much more willing to just go try things out & get help if I can't figure it out than previously; this is what kids do with technology...try it & if it doesn't work try it another way. I have always believed that I was pretty good with technology but now I think I am much more engaged with it & motivated about how to include it in my classroom.

Reading other people's blogs is fun but time consuming. Keeping them on Module One is fine; however, I have not been able to open Amy's blog in the last week or so...it just keeps saying loading but never loads. I know I am not the only one who is experiencing this.

Week 3 Reflection

This week I had fewer opportunities to use my iPad because we spent time where there was no wifi access. I did spend some amount of time on Craig's list looking for cheap used cars...I am still shaking my head that it is cheaper on insurance for my sons to each have their own "beater cars" than for us to only have one for them...but it is! I also have played scramble free & draw free; it has been nice to have a few new games. I also spent some time creating & organizing folders. I checked out everyone's new blog post with the exception of Amy's... For some reason hers would not load the other day. Now that I am becoming a bit more mobile I am hoping to check out photo & video options.

Week 2 reflection

This week I have spent quite a bit of time exploring apps to use with students. Educreations was an interesting one where you could demonstrate a white board lesson and record you talking. There were many apps I found interesting but then you need to purchase add ons or the "full app" at additional cost. I am not sure how this works in our school setting with mobile iPads for grade levels, who covers the expense? Do you need to purchase the app for each iPad? I know some sharing can be done between your own devices but not sure how it works in the educational setting. The social skill builder app was very interesting but not many units available yet. Most of the twelve apps I played around with would be useful in the classroom for interactive practice of skills in a different format. In addition, I used craigslist to search for used vehicles in the $2,000-$3,500 price range; my son is looking for a reliable used vehicle. I also spent one afternoon checking out everyone else's blogs. Stacey was able to help me troubleshoot a blogger typing issue & I was able to make my blog more colorful. I have become a bit addicted to my iPad but that is most likely due to my limited physical options.

My beautiful but frustrating blog

So I spent a few minutes exploring blogger & now have a prettier page. I was ready to throw my iPad last night when it ate two posts & then froze on the third attempt at responding...then I just emailed the person my answer. Technology is so cool when it works & so frustrating when it doesn't!

1st week

So I have explored my iPad quite a bit but I must admit it has been in a post surgery drug induced state so I can't be certain I will remember what I have discovered. I have checked both home & school email, surfed the web, played words with friends, sudoku, angry birds, a dice game, so clay app (which was really boring even in my wacked out state). My son taught me how to sync it to apple tv & run Netflix too. My advantage is I am trying to ensure no one steals my couch...method of success: post surgery recooperation. Oh, there are people here...bye!
